Shrub planting party in the Qu’Appelle Valley
This June volunteers, including SaskEnergy and Farm Credit Canada employees, helped to stabilize Echo Creek. Echo Creek is placed within the Lower Qu’Appelle Watershed, which has been heavily altered. Due to these alterations, larger volumes of water are flowing down Echo Creek and eroding their banks.
Volunteers planted native shrubs in order to stabilize the banks. Once a root system is established, more native species can also grow close to the creek. This community of vegetation will filter the water and dissipate energy from the fast moving water.
Cleaner water and shrubs will provide better habitat for wildlife in the area. The shrubs will also decrease the severity of flooding downstream.
Thanks again to all of those who came out to make a difference!
