Water: A place for wonders

Here are some images of water taken from some of my favourite places in the world.

The first is the view of Lake Ontario taken from my hometown in southern Ontario. When we were kids, my dad used to take my sisters and I to the lake to feed the ducks (which we probably shouldn’t have done, but we didn’t know any better!) These are some of my most treasured memories from childhood. To me, water means a place to spend time with family.

The second image is of the beach in Rhossili Bay, Wales. While on an academic exchange program in England, I spent a weekend in Wales with a friend, another study abroad student from my Canadian school. We spent a whole day at Rhossili Bay walking the beach (which is a lot longer than it looks in the image – five kilometres!) and playing in the sand (because we’re children at heart!) Rhossili Bay is part of Gower, Wales, which was the first area designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the UK. To me, water means a place to have fun with friends.

The third image is of the North Atlantic, with the famous Kilt Rock in the background and the 52-metre Mealt waterfall in the foreground. It is taken from the Isle of Skye, Scotland. During my last week on academic exchange I spent a week travelling around Scotland on a bus tour instead of studying for my exams. It was worth it! I toured Edinburgh, visited small coastal villages, toured several castles, boated on Loch Ness, saw the birth place of Harry Potter and got rained on…every day! But by far my favourite place was the Isle of Skye with its small villages, numerous daily rainbows and spectacular panoramic views of the ocean. To me, water is one of nature’s natural wonders.

And finally, this last image is taken off of Key West, Florida, in the Gulf of Mexico. Last year, I got away from the cold, blustery winter weather to spend some time on the water. I saw a whole pod of dolphins! I also went snorkelling and saw fish, shells, plants, and coral. To me, water is a place that is teeming with life and home to millions of different creatures.
