Retirement from challenging and satisfying careers as a teacher and with the Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation supporting teachers and students in public education creates time for numerous adult learning and community volunteer opportunities for Shirley Humphries. Her parents, John and Marya, valued public education, modelled engagement in community and ensured nature was an integral part of growing up for herself and her three sisters. Sunday afternoon drives with binoculars, nature hikes, picnics and family tenting holidays balanced school studies and responsibilities at home, in the family poultry and farm supplies business and in community clubs in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan.

Four academic degrees (BSc and BEd) from the University of Saskatchewan, an MEd from the University of Victoria and a PhD from the Université de Montréal, French as a second language, numerous informal learning activities and a career in public education demonstrate Shirley's belief that public education is essential for democracy, social justice and sustainability. Shirley and her husband, Greg, reside in Regina, Saskatchewan.
