The foothills region to the west of Calgary comprises the Bow Natural Area, and area where the land transitions between parkland and the Rocky Mountains. Here, varied land use activities coexist with conservation, and grizzly bears and other iconic species continue to roam the eastern slopes of the mountains.

Working together for conservation

The mosaic of foothills, parkland, montane and riparian systems in the region between the City of Calgary and provincially and federally protected mountain parks support rare species and inspire community engagement in conservation. The many conservation partners invested in this landscape work together to ensure the continued ecological viability of the Bow Natural Area.

The OH Ranch — a provincial Heritage Rangeland site — is both a natural and historic landmark in Alberta. The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is committed to protecting 9,444 acres (3,822 hectares) of the ranchlands as a working landscape.

Just south of Longview, the Chinook Ranch was Alberta's 2011 Gift from Canadians, and is another example of what the generosity of Calgary area landowners is helping NCC to achieve.
