Cooking Lake Moraine, Lawrence, Alberta (Photo by NCC)
Cooking Lake Moraine is the Nature Conservancy of Canada's (NCC's) primary Priority Natural Area in the Edmonton region. The area supports extensive boreal forest habitat and is a vital component of freshwater health for the region. The rich habitat in the Cooking Lake Moraine supports a high diversity of rare species and globally significant concentrations of migratory birds.
Local landowners continue to take pride in being associated with such a well-managed landscape, with healthy ecosystems and viable species populations sustained by partnerships in conservation.
NCC projects near Edmonton
The Lawrence property is but one example of an Edmonton area project whose forests provide 160 acres (65 hectares) of aspen stands and shrublands. The intact forests found on the property provide important wildlife habitat for species such as:
- moose
- mule
- ruffed grouse
- great horned owl
- black bear
- Canada lynx
- beaver
- numerous waterfowl
The mix of boreal forest (dominated by trembling aspen and balsam poplar) and wetland breeding grounds for North America's waterfowl make our work around Edmonton vital.
