The Darkwoods Forest Carbon project uses the power of the carbon market to advance large-scale conservation in British Columbia
The Darkwoods Forest Carbon project is a special initiative of the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC). The project markets carbon credits that are generated from the Darkwoods Conservation Area. The credits are sold through the voluntary carbon market to businesses, governments and other agencies that want to reduce their carbon footprint.
The project was developed by a team of carbon experts who have been involved in the carbon and climate change industry for many years. The team worked for three years to create a project that meets the highest international standards available today for the voluntary carbon market. This ensures that the carbon credits generated on Darkwoods will create noticeable benefits for the planet.
In 2011, the Darkwoods Forest Carbon project was awarded the Non-Profit Sector Land Award by the Real Estate Foundation of British Columbia for demonstrating "leadership, innovation, and collaboration related to the sustainable use and conservation of land in British Columbia."

As we struggle globally to understand and address the effects of climate change, the voluntary carbon market has shown itself as one method for reducing our carbon footprint. Many programs, with varying approaches to calculating and marketing carbon credits, have sprung up in the past decade. The evolving world of carbon credits — or offsets — can be very confusing. These frequently asked questions can help you understand how NCC’s carbon program works and why we are proud to be raising money for conservation through the voluntary carbon market.

Project Verification and Validation
As part of its existing and ongoing certifications to the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and the Climate, Community, and Biodiversity Standard (CCB), the Darkwoods Forest Carbon Project is currently undergoing a verification process which reports on the progress and results of the carbon project during 2017 and 2018.
Additionally, the Darkwoods Forest Carbon Project is undertaking a new validation and verification process under the recently-released Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard (SDVISta). This standard provides a framework by which projects may be assessed on the sustainable development benefits of the project and their contribution to the achievement of various United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
*** Note: “Greenhouse Gas removals generated by the Darkwoods Property have been sold [in part] to the Pacific Carbon Trust, and the Nature Conservancy of Canada has made certain commitments in favour of Pacific Carbon Trust with respect to the Darkwoods Property to ensure the permanence of those removals.”
