Michael Paterson is the senior research scientist at the International Institute for Sustainable Development Experimental Lakes Area. He specializes in freshwater food webs and conducts research on the ecosystem effects of human activities, such as microplastics, mercury, endocrine disruptors, hydroelectric development, nutrients, climate change and aquaculture. 

Michael is an adjunct professor in entomology at the University of Manitoba and in biology at Lakehead and Trent universities. He has a B.Sc. from the University of Manitoba, an M.Sc. from Indiana University and a Ph.D. from Dalhousie University. He has been associated with the Nature Conservancy of Canada as a regional and national board member since 2000. Michael is married to Gail Asper and has two sons.
