Oak Lake Sandhills and Wetlands Natural Area, Manitoba

The Maple Lake property, purchased from Mr. and Mrs. Vinck, is one of our first fee-simple projects completed in the unique Oak Lake Sandhills and Wetlands region of southwest Manitoba. More than 300 acres (120 hectares) are now protected here.

Habitat and species

The Maple Lake property is a mix of wetlands and sedge meadows in the lowland areas and native mixed-grass prairie in the higher upland areas.

The wetlands support migrating and nesting waterfowl, including mallard, northern shoveler, gadwall, sandhill crane and cattle egret.

The native mixed-grass prairie supports a variety of grassland birds, including threatened Sprague's pipit and chestnut-collared longspur.

Conservation status

The Nature Conservancy of Canada has currently protected 1,000 acres (400 hectares) in the Oak Lake Sandhills and Wetlands Natural Area.

Threats

Threats include invasive species, conversion of native habitat and recreational and residential development.
