Nestled between Manitoba's "Great Lakes," the Interlake's mosaic of woodlands, wetlands, unique karst features and native prairie supports a wide variety of wildlife.

Habitat

This area contains the most northerly occurrence of tall grass prairie in North America, as well as globally uncommon alvar habitat.

Species

It provides habitat for many species at risk, including:

  • small white lady's-slipper
  • short-eared owl
  • loggerhead shrike
  • piping plover
  • peregrine falcon
  • yellow rail
  • red-headed woodpecker
  • Dakota skipper
  • snapping turtle

Threats

The Natural Area's beauty and abundance is under threat from recreation and other development, and its shorelines are influences by the ecology and health of Lakes Winnipeg and Manitoba.
