Nestled between Manitoba's "Great Lakes," the Interlake's mosaic of woodlands, wetlands, unique karst features and native prairie supports a wide variety of wildlife.
Habitat
This area contains the most northerly occurrence of tall grass prairie in North America, as well as globally uncommon alvar habitat.
Species
It provides habitat for many species at risk, including:
- small white lady's-slipper
- short-eared owl
- loggerhead shrike
- piping plover
- peregrine falcon
- yellow rail
- red-headed woodpecker
- Dakota skipper
- snapping turtle
Threats
The Natural Area's beauty and abundance is under threat from recreation and other development, and its shorelines are influences by the ecology and health of Lakes Winnipeg and Manitoba.
