On September 14, close to 75 people gathered in the enchanting setting of Kenauk – Saumon (Kinonge) river valley, in Montebello, for the first event organized by the Nature Conservancy of Canada's (NCC’s) Young Philanthropist Leaders Committee. We take a look back at a busy day in nature that delighted young and old alike.

Almost a year ago, the Young Philanthropist Leaders Committee was created by two members of NCC’s Board in Quebec: Monica Dingle and Céline Legendre. Their goal was to inspire young professionals to get involved with conservation initiatives and to help to protect nature. For their first fundraising event, they set their sights high: organizing a day of activities in Kenauk, a magnificent 6,000-hectare (14,826-acre) natural area located halfway between Ottawa and Montreal.

After a welcome breakfast at 9 a.m., participants could take part in climbing, yoga, hiking and water activities, such as kayaking, canoeing and paddling. In the morning, two hikes were suggested, one of which was aimed at the younger guests. The trail led to a “magical" bus, where attendees could express their creative talent by indulging in graffiti. The other hike was more conventional, but no less exciting. The hikers, accompanied by NCC staff, could discover some of Kenauk’s natural treasures, which for novices are often difficult to see.

The curious could drop by the scientific kiosk — staffed with a biologist — to have their questions answered. It's not every day that you have a biologist on hand, so some took this opportunity to quench their thirst for knowledge.

After a well-deserved meal break, new activities began. Once again, climbing and water activities were on offer. For those who wanted something more relaxing, a yoga session — with a view of the lake — awaited. Lulled by the lapping water, beginners and experienced practitioners alike thoroughly enjoyed this moment. While some guests were keen to experience as much as possible, this was not the case for nine-year-old Romain. He hardly left the climbing tower all day because it was so much fun. By afternoon, he had become the instructor's assistant!

At the end of the day, with smiles on their faces, everyone gathered to enjoy corn on the cob and share their adventures. The event raised more than $20,000, and the profits will help NCC protect even more natural environments.
