OTTAWA, ON

John Lounds Honoured By Canadian Museum of Nature

Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) President and CEO John Lounds is the recipient of a Nature Inspiration Award from the Canadian Museum of Nature.  It was presented in Ottawa during their 3rd annual event.

Lounds won in the Individual Category from five Canadians shortlisted. He is credited for connecting Canadians to nature and inspiring them to join in the protection and conservation of nature.

The Canadian Museum of Nature`s Nature Inspiration Awards recognize individuals and organizations that, through their work or specific projects, encourage Canadians to take an interest in natural history, create links with nature and contribute to its preservation. Awards were given out in six different categories.   The Nature Conservancy of Canada was also a finalist in the large not-for-profit organization category.

``I wish to congratulate four other very worthy nominees and thank the Canadian Museum of Nature and all involved in the selection process,`` said Lounds. ``It is a privilege to be in a conservation movement of volunteers and supporters who partner with individuals and organizations to find common ground and focus on what can be achieved through habitat conservation``.

Lounds has guided the Nature Conservancy of Canada since 1997. Since that time NCC expanded into all provinces to prioritize conservation areas for wildlife, plants and people. To date, NCC has helped preserve over 2.8 million acres (1.1 million hectares) of forests, wetlands, grasslands and coastal areas. This has been accomplished through land donations, purchases or other solutions such as conservation agreements.  During this period, NCC has grown from 20 employees and an annual budget of $8 million, to 260 employees and a budget of over $100 million.

Lounds has spent much of his professional career working in the protection of nature.  Prior to joining NCC, Lounds was executive director of the Federation of Ontario Naturalists. He was also with the Government of Ontario in various roles including program director for Round Table on Environment and Economy.  Lounds has served on the Canadian Councils of the North American Bird Conservation Initiative and the North American Wetlands Conservation Act.
