National Publications Intern

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is a private, non-profit organization that prides itself on its entrepreneurial, science-based, non-confrontational approach to achieving conservation success. Since its establishment in 1962, NCC and its supporters have protected more than two million acres (800,000 hectares) of natural habitat across Canada. NCC has seven regional offices across the country with a national office in Toronto.
Overview
The National Publications Intern will assist the Editor, Digital and Print Publications of the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) with the production of digital and print publications aimed at NCC donors and supporters across the country. Working independently and with NCC staff, they will assist with planning, research, writing and editing of digital and print publications, including articles for NCC’s e-newsletter, website and 12-page print newsletter (The Ark). The assistant will also assist with uploading and tagging photographs to the NCC image database, as well as fact-check stories (where needed) and other duties as required.
This position is a great opportunity for the successful candidate to apply classroom theories and skills to practical and hands-on work. Tasks such as sourcing photos, primary research, writing and editing will allow the intern to apply and develop skills that are highly valued in the publishing sectors of the workforce.
Reporting Relationships
The National Publications Intern will be supervised by the Editor, Digital and Print Publications. The intern will perform daily tasks alongside the editor while simultaneously being mentored. When working in the office the intern will work both independently and as a team with other members of the National and Regional Communications team. Daily communication, distribution of tasks and feedback will be provided to the Publications Assistant from the Editor, Digital and Print Publications.
Specific Responsibilities
- Assist in photo research
- Assist in researching and sourcing stories for digital and print publications
- Assist in editing and proofreading stories for digital and print publications
- Write stories for NCC’s digital and print publications
- Upload images to the NCC Image Database and tag them appropriately
- Where needed, perform interviews of staff or external sources
- Assist the Editor, Digital and Print Publications with ongoing activities as needed
Skills and Experience
- Background or strong interest in journalism, magazine publishing and/or communications
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to show initiative
- Attention to deadlines
- Ability to multi-task
- Creativity and a strong communication style
- An interest and background in environmental issues, conservation and biodiversity is an asset
- Bilingualism (French/English) is also an asset
As this internship is supported through the Canada Summer Jobs program, the candidate must also meet the following requirements:
- was registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic year;
- intends to return to school on a full-time basis during the next academic year;
- is a student in a secondary, post-secondary, CEGEP (Quebec only), vocational or technical program;
- is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
- is a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act;
- is legally entitled to work according to the legislation and regulations of the Province of Nova Scotia.
