Author, teacher and loving friend Roberta Langtry passed away at the Ina Grafton Gage Retirement Home on August 13, 2005 at the age of 89, leaving in her will the largest bequest in NCC’s history, and the largest bequest ever to conservation in Canada.
Born in Manitoba in 1916, Miss Langtry worked as a public school teacher and speech therapist for the East York Board of Education for over 55 years. Ever concerned with the state of the environment, and an ardent supporter of NCC’s work since 1999, she left NCC an exceptionally generous gift of over $4 million.
“We are extremely grateful for the incredible gift that Miss Langtry left in support of the work of NCC,” said John Lounds, NCC President & CEO. “It has been a pleasure to work closely with Bob and Jenny Borden, Miss Langtry’s executor and friends, to find the best way to direct this gift to advance conservation and focus on her areas of interest.” Her gift will be put to work over five years through four separate funds allowing direct wetland conservation across the country, assisting in communicating NCC’s science work, supporting activities to raise awareness and funds, and conservation in the Oak Ridges Moraine area. A portion of the gift will also be set aside as an endowed fund.
In recognition of her generous gift, a boulder with a plaque will mark 50 acres in the Happy Valley Heritage Forest, in Ontario’s Oak Ridges Moraine, named in Miss Langtry’s memory. If you are interested in becoming a member of the Nature Legacy Society, please phone us at 1-800-465-0029 or e-mail.
