People who travel south from Pincher Creek, Alberta, to Waterton Lakes National Park remember the drive ever after as one of the most beautiful in Canada. Over the years, the pressure to subdivide properties for holiday housing and condominiums had been building steadily. Land values were rising and, although the local ranchers and other landowners had done all they could to protect the open spaces, the task was becoming almost impossible.

In 1996, Doris and Eric Hopkins fulfilled a long-held dream: their generous donation of land, along with the support of local landowners, the provincial government and NCC, ensured that the nature they came to respect would be protected in perpetuity with the creation of the Greater Coyote Lake Conservation Area.
