Invasive species going wild in the Saint John River Valley
Thursday, July 15, 2010 By: Crystal Folkins
The Conservation Volunteers event titled "Weed Pull on the Bluff" took place on Saturday, June 12. Nine volunteers and three NCC staff members spent the morning digging up Woodland Angelica in areas where it was moving in. Because the plant hadn't yet sprouted its enormous white flowers, volunteers first had to be instructed on how to identify it. Gavin Graham, officer of the Department of Agriculture's Integrated Pest Management Unit and a member of the New Brunswick Invasive Species Council, was on hand to explain the threat posed by invasive species like Woodland Angelica and give suggestions on what people could do to help control them in their own neighbourhood.

Thursday, July 15, 2010 By: Crystal Folkins
What could be better than a sunny day on a beautiful island? How about removing two dump truck loads of garbage with the help of two dozen other volunteers? This is exactly what happened on Saturday, June 12, during the Nature Conservancy of Canada's (NCC) Conservation Volunteers event on Brier Island.

Protecting Piping Plovers through community involvement in New Brunswick
Thursday, July 15, 2010 By: Crystal Folkins
This year's Old Home Week runs from July 31 until August 7, just around the time adult plovers and their chicks are preparing for the fall migration. Because the plan of events includes a boat ride out to the barrier beach, NCC staff will be tagging along to ensure that any plovers that happen to be in the area are carefully avoided. Staff will also have the chance to soak in some of the local culture and talk with the public about NCC's ongoing work in Tabusintac and beyond

The Chaisson property is located in Searston, on the south side of the mouth of the estuary, and protects more than 40 feet of estuarine shoreline. The property also contains forests that make up the property's northern edge. This combination provides wonderful staging and nesting habitat for songbirds and especially waterfowl, as well as small mammals.

NCC protecting land for nesting Piping Plovers
Wednesday, June 16, 2010 By: Crystal Folkins
The Piping Plover (or Charadrius melodus), which is named for its melodious song, is a relatively small bird both in size and numbers. The species is designated as endangered under the Species at Risk Act, and while the population is recovering somewhat there were still only 51 pairs recorded in Nova Scotia last year.
It is thus no small matter that two pairs are currently being monitored by Bird Studies Canada (BSC) staff and volunteers on properties under protection by the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC).
