Marijem has been working in the forest and nature sector for 25 years. She obtained her engineering degree (equivalent to MSc) in Forest and Nature Conservation from Wageningen University and Research Centre in 2004 and also completed a master's degree in Public Administration in Governance at the F.H.R. Lim A Po Institute in cooperation with the Institute for Social Studies in 2007. She started in 1997 as an employee of the Suriname Forest Service, and in 2005 she held the position of head of the Suriname Forest Service. From 2006 to 2016, she worked as Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Forest Management Department. Since 2018, she has been a PhD candidate at the Wageningen University and Research Centre in the field of Coastal Protected Areas Governance in Suriname. Since February 2021, she has been working as a scientist at the Department of Environmental Sciences of the faculty of Technological Sciences, Anton de Kom University of Suriname.
