Simon Landhäusser is a Professor in the Department of Renewable Resources at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. After his M.Sc. degree in ecology from the University of Tübingen, Germany in 1989, he studied tree regeneration at the arctic tree line after fire, receiving his Ph.D. in Forest Science in 1994.
Dr. Landhäusser is a naturalist by heart, his backyard in Edmonton boasts more than 150 plant species. He has been teaching introductory courses in plant identification and ecology in Germany and Canada for more than 35 years. Throughout his research career, Dr. Landhäusser has contributed significantly to fundamental and applied forest ecology in the fields of silviculture, forest restoration and regeneration ranging from foundational insights into tree and forest function to innovative advancements in experimental design, methods and broader application in practice. Given the unprecedented environmental challenges faced by ecosystems, this type of work is critical to determine traits and mechanisms of plants that can confer resistance to stress, subsequently informing management strategies for mitigation or adaptation.
