Jessica Houk - Finance Coordinator, BC
How did you come to join the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC)?
I had never heard of NCC prior to working here. I was moving to Victoria and looking for sustainable work that would feed my soul and my desire to create positive change in the world. I saw the job posting, got excited and applied. Now I’m here, and I couldn’t be happier.
What is your educational background and previous experience?
I have a BA in liberal studies, which is made up of minors in English, psychology, art, and women and gender studies. I fell into accounting quite by accident after university and have worked both in the corporate and non-profit worlds. Most recently I was part of the finance team at Ocean Wise Conservation Association, and before that I managed the grounds department at the Vancouver Aquarium (an Ocean Wise Initiative), where my passion for conservation was sparked.
What are you hoping to achieve through your work at NCC?
I’ve gone from helping to conserve our oceans to helping conserve our lands. I guess my eventual goal is to help save the whole world, and NCC is a great avenue to do so!
Describe a typical day at work.
I dabble in a little bit of everything throughout the day. There is the finance side of invoices, reconciling reports, tracking contracts and other various tasks. Then there is the admin side of ensuring plants are watered, office supplies are stocked and, my favourite part, answering the main reception line. I get to talk to people all over the province for a plethora of reasons. Never a dull moment!
What are your hobbies/interests outside work?
Photography, stargazing, piddling about in the garden, cooking, singing, nature walks and exploring BC with my wife.
