Newfoundland and Labrador at a Glance
Since 1994, we have been protecting the landscapes that make Newfoundland and Labrador special — from boreal forests to wetlands and coastlines. Today, we are the single most active conservation organization operating in the province. Together, we can protect the natural places that define Newfoundland and Labrador and create a healthier future for wildlife and communities.
- Driven by experts: Science, Indigenous Knowledge and local community insights strengthen our work to protect, restore and steward Newfoundland and Labrador’s natural areas.
- Scale of protection: We protect more than 15,000 hectares across the province, ensuring the plants and animals that live here can thrive while sustaining the natural systems that surrounding communities depend on.
- Species at risk: We protect habitat for species at risk, including woodland caribou, red crossbill, rusty blackbird and Newfoundland pine marten.
- Critical ecosystems: From boreal forests to wetlands and coastlines, Newfoundland and Labrador is home to a diverse array of ecosystems that sustain wildlife and communities. By focusing our work on priority areas like the Central Newfoundland Ecoregion, we are protecting local biodiversity and building a more resilient future for the province.
Creating lasting impact in Newfoundland and Labrador
Newfoundland and Labrador is home to some of Canada’s largest remaining intact landscapes, with vast areas of wilderness still relatively undisturbed. These natural areas are part of what makes the province so special — but as pressures on these landscapes grow, so does our collective need to protect them. Because the majority of Newfoundland and Labrador is Crown land, we work with government, Indigenous partners and municipalities to care for the coastlines, wetlands and boreal forests that wildlife and communities depend on.
Conserving the boreal forest
The boreal forest is a defining part of Newfoundland and Labrador’s landscape and is home to an incredible variety of wildlife, including the woodland caribou and the at-risk Newfoundland pine marten. That’s why we work with diverse partners to protect and restore these forests, creating connected habitats that support surrounding communities and give wildlife the space they need to move, adapt and thrive.
Protecting the most sensitive ecosystems
From wetlands and saltmarshes to coastal shorelines, we focus on conserving, restoring and caring for the province’s most sensitive ecosystems. These natural areas are particularly vulnerable to disturbance, yet they play a critical role in keeping our waters clean, buffering communities from storms and providing vital habitat for wildlife.
Providing ongoing care
Through ongoing management and care, we ensure that the landscapes we protect remain healthy and resilient for years to come. We restore habitats that have been degraded or lost, control invasive species and recover habitat for species at risk, such as the rare black ash.
Working together for nature
Protecting Newfoundland and Labrador is a shared effort. By working with Indigenous communities, governments, conservation organizations and landowners, we bring together diverse knowledge and expertise to achieve lasting conservation impact.

We’re grateful to the partners who share our vision. Their commitment and collaboration make it possible to protect the places that matter most for people and nature, now and for generations to come.
