Together, we can ensure everyone can always access West Head. Because when nature thrives, people thrive.

Since 1971, the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) has worked with communities in Nova Scotia to ensure ecologically important areas are protected for the long term.

Nova Scotia’s South Shore is one of the province’s premiere tourist and cottage destinations. This picture-perfect scenery that draws people in to visit is also home to sensitive habitat that at-risk and endangered species rely on. As the demand for cottages on the South Shore increases, access is reduced for both wildlife connectivity and recreational use.

Thirty-five hectares at West Head have been generously donated to NCC, ensuring it remains in its natural state in perpetuity. Our goal as good stewards and respectful neighbours is to balance habitat conservation and outdoor recreation for the long-term health of the point. Because when nature thrives, people thrive.

Not only is West Head important to the community, but it also lies within a designated UNESCO biosphere reserve. As one of the most biologically diverse regions in eastern Canada, the stunning coastal barrens here provide food and resting sites for migratory birds like whimbrel, spotted sandpiper and harlequin duck. It is also a nesting area for common nighthawk and Leach’s storm petrel.

Please join us to learn more about this landscape and the lasting impact you can have on conservation for future generations.

Together, through diligent work, we can sustain picturesque natural heritage, like West Head, for today and for generations to come. Donations will be matched dollar for dollar!

For more information and to learn how you can help, please contact NCC's Atlantic Region at 1-877-231-4400 or atlantic@natureconservancy.ca.

Your gift will support activities that advance NCC’s mission in Nova Scotia, including the work that is being done in West Head. All or a portion of your gift may be committed to our provincial Stewardship Endowment Fund, which helps ensure the long-term care of the nature reserves.
