Salt Creek Seed Collection
Help us collect native wildflower seeds to be used in future habitat restoration projects.
October 20, 2024Warkworth, Ontario
Red Cloud Nature Reserve
10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Globally rare ecosystems, such as tallgrass prairies and oak savannah, once covered the Rice Lake Plains. Seeding sites with tallgrass plant species is an essential step in restoration. A recently restored field at the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s (NCC’s) Red Cloud Nature Reserve features many of these tallgrass wildflowers, including hoary vervain, black-eyed Susan, butterfly milkweed, evening primrose and showy tick-trefoil. During this event, volunteers will identify and collect seeds from these plants for NCC to use in our restoration efforts at other sites. Physical activity includes walking over uneven terrain within a three-hectare field. There will be some tall plants and vine plants to walk through. Repetitive movements include bending, reaching and picking seeds.
