10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Join experts and other like-minded nature enthusiasts as we explore Pipestone Creek while identifying plant and wildlife species. These efforts will help track plant and wildlife observations and contribute to the conservation management plan for the area.
Starting at 4:30 a.m., birding enthusiasts Trevor Herriot and Jared Clarke will lead an early-morning bird survey as part of the bioblitz. Participation in this portion of the bioblitz is not mandatory. The remainder of the bioblitz will begin at 10 a.m. You will have the option to camp on-site the night before or after the event.
Located along Pipestone Creek in the Moose Mountain Natural Area, near the city of Moosomin, the Pipestone Creek property consists of 454 hectares of tame and native grasslands mixed with bur oak–aspen parkland habitat. The location of the property within the Pipestone Creek valley makes it an important wildlife corridor in an area at risk of habitat fragmentation.
Species observed on the property include red fox, elk, coyote, bobolink (threatened), sharp-tailed grouse, northern leopard frog (special concern), mink, fisher, northern painted turtle, belted kingfisher, wood duck and river otter. In addition, several archeological sites have been documented on the property.
