The Darkwoods Forest Carbon project uses the power of the carbon market and conservation finance to advance large-scale conservation in Canada. The project markets carbon credits that are generated from the Darkwoods Conservation Area. The credits are sold in the voluntary carbon market to businesses, governments and other agencies that are actively seeking to reduce their carbon footprint.

The award-winning project was developed by a team of carbon experts who have been involved in the carbon and climate change industry for many years. The team worked for three years to create a project that meets the highest international standards available today for the voluntary carbon market. This ensures that the carbon credits generated on Darkwoods will create meaningful benefits for the planet.

In 2011, the Darkwoods Forest Carbon project was awarded the Non-Profit Sector Land Award by the Real Estate Foundation of British Columbia for demonstrating "leadership, innovation, and collaboration related to the sustainable use and conservation of land in British Columbia."

As we collaborate globally to understand and address the effects of climate change, the voluntary carbon market has grown in prominence as one way for corporations to reduce their carbon footprint. Many programs, with varying approaches to calculating and marketing carbon credits, have sprung up in the past decade.

The evolving world of carbon credits — or offsets — can be very confusing. These frequently asked questions can help you understand how NCC’s carbon program works and why we are proud to be raising money for conservation through the voluntary carbon market.

Project verification and validation

As part of its existing and ongoing certifications to the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and the Climate, Community, & Biodiversity Standard (CCB), and a validation and verification process under the Sustainable Development Verified Impact Standard (SDVISta), the Darkwoods Forest Carbon Project provides reports on the progress and results of the carbon project.

The Darkwoods Forest Carbon Project is North America’s first project to be certified under SD VISta. This standard provides a framework by which projects may be assessed on the sustainable development benefits of the project and their contribution to the achievement of various United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
