Road safety measures to take if you want to help a turtle on a public road

Drivers who spot a turtle or any other animal on the road should observe the following instructions:

  • You must not reduce your speed below 60 km/h on the highway;
  • On other roads, you may reduce your speed, but in a way that does not put the safety or lives of other users in danger;
  • If attempting to avoid a turtle, you must not cross the solid line separating the two lanes;
  • If you must stop on the shoulder of the road, ensure you are not obstructing traffic;
  • You cannot stop on the shoulder in areas where the speed limit is 70 km/h or more.
