Nature Conservancy of Canada accelerates conservation in partnership with Intact Financial Corporation

April 14, 2022

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is thrilled to share the news of a five-year, $8-million partnership to deliver nature-based solutions in response to biodiversity loss and climate change.

Today, Intact released its five-part climate transition plan that sets targets for its Canadian, U.S. and European businesses. One important pillar of that plan includes the doubling down on adaptation projects and nature-based solutions. For Intact, NCC's history of measurable impact and leadership made us a preferred partner.

Through its partnership with NCC, Intact will invest $8 million to:

  • conserve and restore more of Canada's threatened wetlands, which are critically important carbon sinks and provide communities with natural defence in the face of climate change;
  • undertake a process to develop a made-in-Canada protocol for wetland-based carbon offsets, which will be made available for use by international standards bodies; and
  • translate the protocol into a sustainable finance tool for use in Canada.

Learn more about this partnership here.

This partnership showcases how NCC is accelerating the pace of conservation in Canada. In the past two years alone, NCC has influenced the protection of more than 1 million hectares (almost twice the size of Prince Edward Island), coast to coast to coast. Over the next few years, the organization will double its impact by mobilizing Canadians and delivering permanent, large-scale conservation.

In the face of rapid biodiversity loss and climate change, nature is our ally. There is no solution to either without nature conservation. When nature thrives, we all thrive.

About

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is the country’s unifying force for nature. As a trusted partner NCC works with people, communities, businesses and government to protect and care for our country’s most important natural areas. Since 1962, NCC has brought Canadians together to conserve and restore more than 15 million hectares.

The Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation (Intact Centre) is an applied research centre at the University of Waterloo. The Intact Centre was founded in 2015 with a gift from Intact Financial Corporation, Canada's largest property and casualty insurer. The Intact Centre helps homeowners, communities and businesses to reduce risks associated with climate change and extreme weather events.
