How did you come to join the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC)?

I first came to NCC as a conservation intern in 2018, based out of the Halifax office. This internship was such a positive and career building experience, I made it my goal to return to NCC once I graduated university. In 2020, I was fortunate to find that opportunity, returning to NCC as a conservation biologist based out of Halifax. After two years in my role and a lifetime in Nova Scotia, I was ready for a change of scenery, so I packed up my life and moved to British Columbia. I was excited to be given the opportunity to continue my work with NCC, now working in the stunning Canadian Rockies.

What is your educational background and previous experience?

I am a graduate from Dalhousie University with a B.Sc. in environmental science and biology and a certificate in Environmental Impact Assessment. I also recently started taking courses as part of the University of Victoria’s Restoration of Natural Systems diploma program.

Prior to returning to NCC, I worked with Mi’kmaw Conservation Group, supporting community-driven stewardship and monitoring of culturally significant aquatic species at risk, including Atlantic salmon. I also held several summer internships as a student, allowing me to gain experience in aquatic restoration and terrestrial-based stewardship and monitoring activities, with both non-profits and provincial government.

What are you hoping to achieve through your work at the Nature Conservancy of Canada?

I hope to make a positive impact on the people, ecosystems and species around me, by contributing to caring for these important natural landscapes so that they can continue to benefit all those who rely on them. I am especially excited to contribute to restoration efforts and put my current coursework to practical use.

What is your favourite place in nature?

My favourite place to find solace in nature is my family’s small hunting camp in rural Nova Scotia, situated on the east branch of the St. Mary’s River. I am looking forward to finding new favourite places in the new mountain landscape I find myself in.

What are your hobbies/interests outside work?

Outside of work, I love hiking, camping and canoeing, all of which allow me to explore new places. I also enjoy snowboarding, which is part of what drew me to the Rocky Mountains.
