Black Oak

Black oak leaves are dark green and shiny and highly variable in shape, which means the species is often misidentified.

Identification tips

Black oaks have a characteristic horizontal breaking pattern in the bark at the base of the trunk. They usually have a single dominant trunk that tends to lean to one side in the canopy, whereas red oaks generally have a more erect, sturdy form.
